Garachico: the old port of Tenerife

Garachico is a small coastal town located in the northwestern part of the island of Tenerife. It is the center of a small municipality with a population of almost 5,600 people. The town is nestled in a narrow valley between the Atlantic coast and the impressive volcanic cliffs that, with a height of more than 500 meters, tower spectacularly over the town.

Garachico is practically devoid of sandy coastline except for two beaches, which are covered in black volcanic pebbles, one in the eastern part of the city near the port and a smaller one in the west. The city has an extremely cool and very pleasant spring climate throughout the year. The average daytime temperature in this area of Tenerife varies between 16 and 25 ° C.

The perfect climate to enjoy

Generally, the weather is never too hot or cold. Due to its excellent climatic conditions, Garachico and some other neighboring towns and villages in the region are known as the “Land of Eternal Spring”. Unlike the dry, clear and warm south of Tenerife, in Garachico it rains a lot. The average number of rainy days is between 10 and 14 per month depending on the season.

Unlike the south coast, which is just a few kilometers away, the beach season in Garachico does not last 12 months a year. Generally, the period between June and October offers a lot of days that are pleasant and warm enough for swimming, although even in the middle of winter it is possible to enjoy a lot of sun and warm temperatures.

Garachico, a place for culture lovers

Garachico is an interesting place to explore, ideal for culture lovers. In this location you can experience the authentic Canarian spirit that originated on the island before it became an international tourist center. You can still see quiet and peaceful cobbled streets, small family restaurants offering traditional island cuisine and delicious fish dishes, small churches and old Spanish-style buildings.

Today, Garachico is still far from the hustle and bustle characteristic of Canarian resorts. This town is still known as one of the most remote on the island. Even during the busiest months, you can find peace and quiet. Most of Garachico’s coastline is a combination of rugged rocks, black igneous stones, large waves, and snow-white sea foam.

Garachico

Without a doubt, the worst moment in the history of Garachico was the catastrophic eruption of the Trevejo volcano in 1706. It spilled huge amounts of lava, causing serious damage in the area. The deadly lava flow completely destroyed the port, leaving many people without a livelihood and condemned to poverty. Ambitious local residents were able to revive the city and rebuild the devastated port, but Garachico never fully regained the glory and economic importance of the period before the fatal disaster.

The attractions of the town

In several places on the coast you can find typical Canarian natural pools dug directly into the rocks and filled with seawater. As in many other places on the north coast of Tenerife, near Garachico you will find vast banana plantations. The main attractions of the town are the Castillo de San Miguel (Castillo de San Miguel), which was built in volcanic stone in the second half of the 16th century, the famous Plaza Juan González de la Torre and the Monastery of San Francisco.
