5 places to enjoy Tenerife under the stars

Tenerife is one of the best places to observe the stars. As the highest peak in Spain, not to mention the third largest volcano in the world, Mount Teide offers an incredible place for stargazing. From a height of 12,000 feet, away from the bright lights and frenetic bustle of neighboring resorts, we had a wonderful view of the stars that populate our galaxy.

Blessed with high altitude and little light pollution, this beautiful Canary Island is a worthy mecca for stargazing. These are some of the best places where you can contemplate the universe and beyond.

The viewpoint of Masca

At more than 1,000 feet above sea level, this rugged outpost, situated in the beautiful Santiago del Teide location on the northwestern tip of the island, is perfect for contemplating the vastness of the universe. In autumn you can see the constellations of Pisces, Aquarius and Capricorn, you can even catch a glimpse of Fomalhaut sparkling like a diamond in the sky some 25 light-years away.

Sierra de Guajara

To get to this it seems it is necessary to undertake a good walk. However, once the place is reached, the reward is more than gratifying. It is a place full of local history. It was in that same place, on May 17, 1910, that the Parisian astronomer Jean Mascart made some remarkable observations related to the passage of Halley’s comet.

To open your own path, you must walk the Degollada de Guajara trail to Alto de Guajara. The walk can take a little over two hours, but at the end of the walk the remains of Mascart’s small hut can be discovered along the way.

Izaña

Are you ready to gaze at the stars with real astronomers? You can head to one of the most famous and serious places on planet Earth to do it. The Teide Observatory in Izaña is located at 2000 meters above sea level, and is affiliated with the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands. It houses telescopes and instruments from up to 60 institutions from 19 different countries within its elegant white-domed campus.

Roulette Lookout

Most of the best stargazing photography to come out of this part of the world stands out not just for jeweled images of dazzling celestial bodies. No, what really sets the best photos apart are the accompanying silhouettes of strange volcanic rock formations.

To get your own starlit look, head to Mirador de la Ruleta, right next to Roques de Garcia, where the towering Wile E Coyote-style rock formations of La Fortaleza frame the sky in absolutely stunning shapes. unique

Cañadas de Teide Inn

If you have the impression that to look at the stars in Tenerife you have to take long walks, with this place you are in luck. There is a state hostel located in a privileged position at the foot of the mighty Teide, the third largest volcano in the world, didn’t you know that?, where every Friday the staff offers a free open-air guided tour.
