The Tajao arch is one of the wonders that we can visit in Tenerife. It attracts the curiosity of visitors due to the environment in which it is located and the peculiar shape it has acquired over the years. It is basically a natural arch that has been carved with erosion millennium after millennium.
This stone bridge, which is also known as the Bijagua arch because of the ravine in which it is located, is about 10 meters high and about 30 meters long. It is made up of volcanic material found in this area of the island and originates from eruptions that occurred several hundred thousand years ago.
It is estimated that this natural bridge began to form to become as we see it now approximately 200,000 years ago. However, it is not the only lava formation that we can see in the area, although it is undoubtedly the best known and most visited. It is an example of what nature can do over time.
How to get to the Tajao arch
Although the Tajao arch is in no man’s land and does not have signs or road information, it is quite easy to get there. It is located just 300 meters from the TF-1 highway, which is one of the main highways on the island of Tenerife.
Whether we come from the north or from the south, we will have to take exit 46, on the TF-1, which indicates the direction of Tajao and Complejo Ambiental (TF-632).
If you are coming from the south, once you leave the highway, you must take the exit located on the left indicating Tajao and La Caleta, on the TF-632. After about 80 meters there is a field on the left, where you can park your car without problems.
If you come from the north, the signs will be on the right, but you simply have to follow them and in just over 100 meters you can reach the area where you can park your car next to the Tajao arch.
Once the car is parked, you only have to walk along a path for about 150 meters until you reach the arch. It is simple and has no loss. It should be mentioned that you do not have to pay any type of entry, nor to park the car.
It is possible to go from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to the Tajao arch by public bus. The stop is Tajao and line 111. This line goes from the capital to the Costa Adeje station. There is a bus every half hour throughout the day, except for the section between 23:00 and 05:00.
